Intriguing four piece Masters of the Sea are set to make surf-worthy waves rippling far beyond their birthplace of Kilmarnock , Ayrshire where we lay our scene. With a healthy diet of Vampire Weekend, MGMT and The Strokes thrown in the influence pot, this band conjure up an ambitious noise that is in one serving whimsical and in another dark, ominous and often sinister. Lead singer, Stevie Smith’s voice nurtures the bands eccentricities with range to rival the deep drawl of Paul Banks (Interpol) at one end and chirpy high notes of Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) at the other. Sharp lyricism and a carefully crafted structure evident on each track is more than enough to catch and hold the attention of new ears. The start/ stop feature, a la The Strokes, although repetitive, is still relevant in capturing the slow-to-build climax which carries the listener on a journey of mixed pace. Although segmented and in danger of being fussy this signature style is utterly stimulating live. Businessm’n offers moments of fun, with a layering of vocals and a bouncy bass line to strengthen the upbeat and punchy sound, whilst darker notes and rolling drums heard on Moonroom showcase the band’s confident approach to a mixed genre, spotlighting each member as a talented and intelligent musician in their own right. Masters of the Sea are a band that fully understand the importance in opening the door to their audience and letting them step inside their world as opposed to simply playing at them. We’ve been waiting on an audacious band like this. The tide is high, set to get even higher
